Personally I would go with the Toyota Corolla. Even though it can be sporty, it is incredibly safe and gets great gas mileage around 30mpg I believe. If not, my second choice would be the Honda Accord because it is also safe and reliable.
Either way you look at it, Honda and Toyota are some of the most reliable cars available.
