The World Rally Championship (WRC) has taken a couple of big blows in the recent past. The big-dogs from Japan have all pulled out: first Mitsubishi and then Subaru. Without those two stars, the Europeans stayed in it and began taking win after win. Citroen and Ford might have a lot more competition now that Volkswagen have announced that they are planning on joining in with their Polo R WRC.
A full rally spec concept, the Polo R makes a class restricted 300 horsepower from a 1.6 liter turbocharged four-cylinder. AWD is obvious and so is some extensive aero work to make the VW rally ready. The company may have never entered a WRC race, VW does have a lot of rally experience especially in Dakar. Even so, any entry into WRC is a welcome one and it is nice to see that motor sport in all its forms is not dead.
