The absolute workhorse of the Chrysler Group is and always has been the Ram pickup. With its available hot-rod Hemi V8 or polar reversing Cummins diesel, the truck has always been brawny but in all honesty, the current base drivetrain is rather lacking. That might soon change as a replacement for the old, 3.7 liter V6 and five speed automatic is around the corner. When the revised truck is revealed next month, there is a good chance that under its hood will be the Ward’s 10 Best Pentastar engine and fitted to that should be Chrysler’s eight speed ZF automatic.
According to an Automotive News article, the Ram will be offered with the new corporate block by the end of the year. The report came from within Chrysler but at this point, nothing official has been said in confirmation. Even still, the chances of a Pentastar powered Ram are rather high, especially considering the number vehicles adopting the block. The 3.7 liter represents a Chrysler before their renaissance while the all-aluminum, 3.6 liter DOHC engine has been the main motivation for the brand’s rebirth. If the Ram does adopt the drivetrain, it will gain actual performance and should return base model sales increases. Take into consideration what the Pentastar did for the Jeep Wrangler as it turned the icon from a slow crawler to a hot-rod all purpose machine. Hopefully, the Ram will benefit even more so from simple but good engineering.
