The first head has rolled as the result of the ongoing Volkswagen TDI emissions scandal. Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn has resigned from his position at the head of the German company. In a statement today, Winterkorn said he was “…stunned that misconduct on such a scale was possible in the Volkswagen Group,” and that as CEO he accepts “…responsibility for the irregularities that have been found in diesel engines…”

He goes on to state that Volkswagen needs a fresh start, and that includes staff, so he is making way for the fresh start to begin by stepping down.

There is no word yet on who will fill the now vacant postion, but if I was a betting man, I would put my money on the CEO of Porsche, Matthias Muller. Under his watch, Porsche has become one of the most profitable automotive brands in the world, and he would certainly have the backing of several members of the board.

As always, this is a developing story, so please keep it locked on AutoTalk.com for more news as we get it.
