Volvo, easily best known for its safety innovations, was recognized by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) for its countless contributions to automotive safety. Two Volvo employees, Thomas Broberg and Erik Coelingh both received awards from the American based administration for safety leadership and engineering.
“It is naturally an honour to be recognised by such a well-known organisation in the field of safety,” said Broberg. Every two years, the NHTSA gives out a select number of awards to people who have made contributions towards the enhancement of traffic safety. Volvo’s Broberg received the “Special Award of Appreciation” for his leadership and contributions as a Safety Expert for Volvo.
Coelingh was given the 2011 U.S. Government Award for Safety Engineering Excellence by the NHTSA. Coelingh was involved in the development of Volvo’s Collision Warning and Auto Brake Systems as well as being responsible for research towards the Pedestrian Detection System. “I was delighted when I heard the news. It’s a marvellous award and of course I’m immensely proud,” said Coelingh. “This has been a fantastic journey. When I started the department was small and active safety was still only at the conceptual stage. Today it is a large and vital part of our operation. And our journey is not yet over.”
