A rather strange issue has infected certain Volvo vehicles so much so that the automaker will be issuing a voluntary recall. On certain S60 sedans and XC60 SUVs, the underbody could be at a higher risk to damage due to a manufacturing flaw. The coating that is sprayed along the undercarriage may have been mix incorrectly and over-applied, which would lead to a build up and cause rigid, “icicle-like” areas to form. If the coating forms around the fuel lines under the vehicles, they could penetrate the system, cause a fuel leak and ultimately start a vehicle fire.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), potentially 2,742 vehicles are at risk. Volvo will be investigating 2012 model year S60s and XC60s, but how many of each has yet to be revealed. In order to remedy the problem, certified dealers will inspect the undercarriage for excess coating. If it exists, it will be removed and all damaged or in-danger fuel lines will be replaced. The recall is expected to start on or before April 13 of this year and all repairs will take place at no extra cost to owners.
