It appears as if the Southern United States general distaste for unions may be waning slightly. The Detroit News is reporting that workers of the Chattanooga, TN Volkswagen plant will vote to decide potential unionization through the UAW next week.

If approved, the plant will become the first US plant to adopt a German-styled works council union.

The voting will be done via secret ballot, and the whole program is being run by the National Labor Relations Board to prevent any tampering of the results be an involved party.

As it stands the Chattanooga plant is the only Volkswagen plant in the world that is not unionized. Traditionally, southern states are against unions, but in today’s weak economy perhaps the promise of better negotiating power in the fields of pay and benefits has persuaded enough workers.

Keep your eyes on Autotalk for the official word on the decision after next week.
