Detroit is fast approaching, and the automakers are starting to spill the goods on their upcoming models and debuts. Earlier we brought you news of the exciting new Mk 7 Golf R, and now we have information on a new ultra fuel-efficient Passat. There is no diesel fuel or hybrid power here, but VW is still claiming 42 mpg fuel economy.
The secret to the Passat’s prodigious fuel economy is the EA211 1.4-liter TSI engine. This engine has direct injection and features turbocharging, but the big addition is cylinder deactivation. You read that right, this is a four-cylinder with cylinder deactivation, and Volkswagen claims it is the first ever. So during certain situations the BlueMotion Passat is running on only two cylinders.
To enhance fuel efficiency even further, the DSG transmission comes equipped with a coasting function that effectively puts the car in neutral when you let off of the accelerator. When you use the full power of that 1.4-liter you are given 150 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of twist.
Technically this is a concept, but don’t be fooled by the title. If this model gets a good response at the Detroit show it will be put into production.
We expect Volkswagen to release more info about this new sedan after the official unveil at NAIAS.
