Yet another exciting weekend of racing took place at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The IMSA series has been nothing but excitement and shakeups this entire season, and this round was no different. We’ll start with the GTLM class where most of the action took place.
Fresh off of an aggressive race at the streets of Long Beach, both Porsche and Corvette were out for the win, with tempers flaring up in epic fashion we saw quite a bit of paint trading between the 4 cars. In the end the race turned into a battle of fuel economy, and the #67 Ford GT won, bringing home the car’s first class victory. Also a surprise, the #68 Ferrari 488 GTE took second place and the #912 Porsche 912 brought up the rear for third place.
In the Prototype class, Mazda came out swinging, placing both first and second overall. Unfortunately they were both plagued with issues, the #55 car had a major refueling issue that cost them the lead, and the #70 car experienced an engine failure mid race. In the end the #60 Honda took first followed by the #90 Visit Florida Corvette and the #31 Action Racing Express Corvette.
Race number 2 was equally as exciting. The PC class started with what looked like a blue angels diamond pattern, and they held that all the way through. After two hours of battle the #52 Oreca car took first, followed by the #8 and #54 Oreca FLM09’s.
The GT Daytona class is a usual crowd favorite and did not disappoint. Between the first place #23 911 GT3 R, the new #63 Scuderia 488 GTE taking second, and the #007 Aston Martin taking third, a strong battle took place over the 2 hour race. Fuel mileage was the name of the game and smart strategy allowed the top five competitors to finish in an extremely close race.
We’ve got some big races coming up in the IMSA series over the next few months, so make sure you stay tuned for more race coverage here at AutoTalk.com
