Mercedes-Benz USA manufactures the line of utility vans known as the Sprinter. In North America, the Sprinter is known both as a Dodge and a Freightliner and comes in a plethora of shapes and sizes. Certain model years and styles of this multi-purpose machine are being recalled due to an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into a potential intake manifold leak.
Model years 2002 and 2003 2500 and 3500 Sprinter vans, both in Dodge and Freighliner drab, may have faulty intake manifolds that corrode. When the sulfur in the diesel fuel used in these vans builds up too much, the manifold can be damaged, causing an exhaust leak. This is due to sulfuric acid build-up in the piping. Damage could also be afflicted upon the fuel return line leading to a fuel leak that could potentially cause an engine fire.
Various dealers will remedy this issue. Mercedes-Benz will contact Freightliner owners while Chrysler LLC will fix Dodge products. Both Chrysler and Freightliner/Mercedes-Benz will repair the issue free of charge.
