Nissan Motor Company is currently in the process of recalling certain models of their compact Sentra sedan. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem is with the 2.0 liter engine cars and their batteries. When assembled, the zinc coating put on the terminal stud bolts was applied a little too liberally. Too much zinc can cause the battery’s voltage drop which could lead to anything from improper lighting, slow starting and or damage to the engine control unit. When moving, the engine could also stall at which point it might not start again.

Nissan is looking into 2010 and 2011 model year Sentras for the issue. As of right now, approximately 33,803 cars are at risk. Models manufactured from May 11 through May 22, 2010 as well as ones built between June 8 and October 25, 2010 are to be recalled. Certified dealers will inspect the terminals and if needed, replace them and their covers at no extra cost to owners. Nissan will begin the recall on or around January 23, 2012.
