The current generation U.S. spec Volkswagen GTI is a fast car with 210 horsepower from its 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder. Outside of America, the GTI makes more power with 235 via different tuning but that might soon change. There are talks of VW bringing over the 235 horsepower 35th Anniversary Edition to the U.S. The front wheel drive hot hatch is available with a six speed manual or the dual-clutch automated manual DSG.
If and when VW imports the 35th Anniversary Edition, it will have to change the name. The number refers to the 35 years that the GTI has been on sale in Europe which is longer than it has been sold in America. 2012 does however mark the 30th year Volkswagen has been selling the GTI in America, so perhaps we might see the 2012 Volkswagen GTI 30th Anniversary Edition some time soon.
