What do you get when you give a group of cars too much horsepower and put them on a tight and technical course mixing concrete, dirt and mud? You get the international sensation known as rallycross and for the first time in a long time, the motorsport is making a well publicized showcase in the U.S. Ready for some serious tire shredding, dirt slinging and noise making action is the three car team officially backed by the mud loving legend Subaru. The first round of the 2012 Global RallyCross Championship is fast approaching.
“We are bringing Rallycross to a new group of racing fans and I think that they are going to be excited by what they see,” said Dave Mirra, one of the three Subaru PUMA Rallycross Team drivers. The automaker may not be green to the world of rally racing, but this is the start of its American division’s more in-depth backing towards a rallycross team. Combining elements of autocross, road racing and off road driving, the first round of the unique motorsport will take place at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina. On May 26, a myriad of 550 plus horsepower monsters, including three WRX STIs, will compete head-to-head on a custom-built three-quarter-mile course that includes straights, hairpins and water crossings.
Bucky Lasek, Dave Mirra, and Sverre Isachsen comprise the first ever Subaru PUMA Rallycross Team. The 2012 season of the Global RallyCross Championship will take place across five rounds scattered throughout the nation. At each round, fans and spectators will not only be able to witness one of the most unusual motorsports created, but will get a chance to interact with racers and their hardly tamed steeds.
