For years, the hot-rod Subaru WRX and STIs have been based on the humble little Impreza sedan and coupe. Even though not too many people have complained, there are some tough parameters to go through in order to achieve the level of performance wanted from a STI when the starting point is a car that was never meant to be driven sideways. For this reason, when the 2013 model year rolls around, the WRX and STI will no longer be associated with the Impreza. According to Car & Driver, an all-new and dedicated platform is being developed for the next generation of high output, all wheel drive monsters.
Under the hood of the next WRX and STI will continue to be turbocharged Boxer power. The newly developed “FB” 2.0 liter flat four will serve as the main powerplant and will make more than 300 horsepower in STI trim. The new platform, which will also continue Subaru’s time-old tradition of all wheel drive (unlike the rear wheel drive BRZ) will weigh less than the current generation. Official word is still out on wheelbase, body style and whether or not a massive rear wing will show its love-it or hate-it face.
