The official news of Saab’s bankruptcy is only a few weeks old, but hope for the brand might be completely lost. Since Swedish Automobile N.V. is no longer affiliated with the vehicles, the name Saab is on the table to be purchased. It would appear that the first company to show interest hails from India: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. Known for building boxy, tough and apocalyptic sport utilities and trucks, Mahindra is supposedly in talks with the two court-appointed Swedish administrators who are taking care of Saab’s bankruptcy.

At this point in time, the news is still speculation. According to an Automotive News article, nothing has been made official or public. Perhaps just an insider rumor, the buyout is still a rather charming idea. Mahindra has been building in the recent past purchasing a large part of South Korean manufacture, Ssangyong Motor Co., and Renault’s holdings of an Indian sedan venture to build the Reva Electric Car. Whether or not it happens and how it happens is still a mystery but it gives hope. Saab may be quirky, but they hold too many chapters in the book of automotive history to be left out in the cold.
