If you are a huge fan of track days and love to spend an afternoon flogging high-powered machines around a slab of tarmac, chances are good you own a 911. Specifically a 911 GT3. Well pay attention, because Porsche and the NHTSA have just issued a recall notice that could save your life.
The rear wheel hubs of certain 911 GT3 models built between May 15. 2009 and February 11, 2010 may be prone to failure under “certain driving conditions”. The recall notice also states that the suggested maintenance intervals may not be sufficient to detect or prevent the problem.
Now the “certain driving conditions” are not specified, but we imagine that a track day scenario is the most likely culprit, and having a wheel bearing fail at speed could lead to quite a catastrophic accident.
Porsche was expected to start notifying the owners of the 455 affected models early last week. If you are worried you have one of the affected cars, you can call Porsche directly at 1-800-767-7243. Your local dealer will replace the hubs on your GT3 free of charge, and provide you with revised maintenance schedule for the hubs.
