Way back in 1998, Jeep enthusiast were blessed by the Mopar Gods when the 360 cubic inch Magnum V8 was dropped into the Grand Cherokee creating the 5.9 Limited. This marriage produced the fastest SUV on the market and paved the way for a special breed of Jeeps that are able to put a major hurt on numerous sports cars. The last generation Jeep SRT8 was a marvel of novelty and passion and would stomp out a 0-60 run in less than 5 seconds. With the brand new Grand Cherokee leading Chrysler’s rebirth campaign, a new hot rod people hauler was a given an the New York Auto Show has confirmed that Detroit isn’t out just yet.

Like the last SRT8 Jeep, this new for 2012 monster gets is luster from a Mopar Hemi V8. This time around it’s the 6.4 liter, 392 Hemi that will also see duty in other SRT Chryslers. Although a remarkably simple engine, it still produces a neck snapping 465 lb-ft of torque and punches through the atmosphere with an equal 465 hp. With a re-mapped 5 speed automatic and Jeep’s own AWD, expect this two-ton SUV to hit 60 mph in around 4.5 seconds.

Unlike the last SRT8, this generation is a lot more subdued in its looks. The fenders and bumpers are more flush with the rest of the body and things seem more smoothed out. It is still a sight to be seen, especially with 20-inch wheels and big, Brembo supplied brakes. What’s even more special is this generation’s rear will allow for a proper tow hitch so a trailer can be hauled. The verdict is still out on whether or not Jayco will produce a pop-up camper that can stay together at 150 mph.
