As the 2012 Chevrolet Volt becomes available nationwide, it is becoming more popular by the minute. Proof of this can be found in a recent purchase by the City of New York for 50 Volts. The purpose for all of those Volts: to be used as city police cars. This will be the first time the New York City Police Department will use an electric car as a patrol vehicle. The new Volts will also add to the already stout 430 electric cars used by the City’s fleet.
“This is the latest and largest-ever addition of electric vehicles to the City’s fleet, which is already the largest municipal clean-air vehicle fleet in the nation,” said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The Volts were purchased not only to reduce fuel consumption prices but help improve the quality of air inside the city as well. “It’s all part of our PlaNYCagenda to create a greener, greater New York City.”
The NYPD Volts are basically unchanged mechanically as they still offer the ability to operate fully electric and zero emissions for up to 35 miles. After that, the gas engine/generator will engage, furthering the driving range an additional 344 miles. Bathed in classic blue and white NYPD war paint, the Volts are full-blown patrol cars with everything a police officer would need on a day-to-day basis.
