Mitsubishi Motors North America recently announced that the upcoming, fully electric and zero emissions 2012 i will be slightly more expensive. Bumping the price of both trim levels by $1135, the i will still be the least expensive, fully electric vehicle on the mass market. Taking into account the $7500 federal tax credit that will go hand-in-hand with a i purchase, the base ES will carry a net cost of $21,625 while the upgraded SE will go for $23,625.
The increase in price can be attributed to the North American’s market economy. According to Mitsubishi’s press release, the slight jump is “Due to unforeseen changes in market conditions.” Without the federal tax credit, which might not be available for later models, a base 2012 i carries a MSRP of $29,125. That is still less than its biggest competitor, the Nissan LEAF. Available options for the i include a $2,790 Premium package that includes HDD navigation, rear back-up camera and FUSE handsfree phone system.
