A voluntary recall is being issued for various models of Mini cars. The problem can be found in the high performance turbocharged engine models, including the John Cooper Works (JCW) cars. In order to keep the extra heat produced by the blower at bay, an electric auxiliary water pump cools the turbo and is controlled by an electronic circuit board. That board is what is causing the issue as it can malfunction, overheat and ultimately lead to an engine fire. BMW, Mini’s current owners, will be conducting the recall.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a total approximation of 88,911 vehicles are at risk so far. All affected vehicles use the 1.6 liter turbocharged Prince engine and include the 2007-2011 Cooper S, 2009-2011 Cooper S Convertible, 2008-2011 Clubman S, 2011 Countryman S, 2009-2011 JCW Cooper, 2010-2011 JCW Cooper Convertible and 2009 JCW Clubman. All the Minis being recalled were built between November 14, 2006 through January 18, 2011. BMW will begin notifying owners during February, 2012 and remedy the issue by having certified dealers replace the turbo’s water pump. This will take place at no extra cost to owners.
