Michigan State Police Department recently put on its pursuit vehicle testing to determine its next line of fleet cars and trucks. Gathered were the police versions from Ford, Dodge and Chevrolet and in the end, the line up of GM police patrol vehicles (PPV) came out on top. Lead by the new Caprice PPV was the Impala PPV and Tahoe PPV.
The Caprice had some tough competition this year with the Dodge Charger and Ford Tauras Interceptor. Despite its massive size and weight, the 6.0 liter variant of the vehicle that was once a Pontiac G8, stopped from 60 mph in just 125.8 ft. It also recorded the best top speed of 154 mph. The Impala PPV might have impressed more as for 2012, its 3.6 liter LFX V6 received a boost in power. Of all the V6 entrys, the Chevrolet hit the hightest top speed at 150 mph. 28 mpg can still be obtained on the highway, making the Impala PPV a top pick.
“We increased the 2012 Impala’s power significantly, so it was a wolf in sheep’s clothing and surprised quite a few agencies,” Dana Hammer, manager for GM Law Enforcement Vehicles said. “We did this while not sacrificing the safety performance or fuel efficiency of the vehicle.”
On a larger scale, the new for 2012 Tahoe PPV is currently the only traditional SUV built specifically for police use. With a top speed of 139 mph, it certainly knows how to hustle down some bad guys. And with a full size cargo capacity, Hammer mentioned that the Tahoe allows police officers to “get their cat and eat it too.”
