Mercedes-Benz recently announced an all-new option for their most current hot-rod flagship, the SLS AMG. For $3,000, a selectable AIR RIDE CONTROL suspension system with adjustable damping can be fitted to make the SLS even more multi-talented. Special, all-new electronically controlled dampers are the star and allow for three different driving personas: Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus.
Comfort mode allows for optimal grand touring as it allows for the most cushion. It is the default mode whenever the SLS is started. Around town excursions and jaunts on the freeway will find most drivers selecting Comfort mode. Sport is the next level up, giving the suspension a much more controlled and tighter stance. Electromagnetically manipulated valves control the oil flow inside the dampers when Sport is activated to stiffen the shock absorber’s actions. Once Sport Plus mode is selected, all bets are off as this is the mode to destroy lap times and swing the SLS sideways.
Working alongside with the AIR RIDE CONTROL is the SLS AMG’s selectable transmission and traction and Electronic Stability Control. With the three suspension settings, the seven speed features four modes (Controlled Efficiency, Sport, Sport plus and Manual) while the ESP has three: On, Sport and Off. With the dampers set to Sport Plus, the transmission put in Manual mode and ESP turned Off, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will probably excite more than just one driver.
