Americans eager to get a glimpse of Maserati’s new 2017 Levante will want to pack their bags and make reservations for New York at the end of the month to see one up close and personal. Maserati’s first ever SUV will be making its North American debut during the New York International Auto Show at the Javits Center in New York City.
Although one could argue that the general styling is comparable to the Mercedes GLE and BMW X6, there’s no mistaking the Levante for anything other than a Maserati. The signature dished grille, complete with vertical slats and massive trident, fender portholes and trapezoidal C-pillar give it away instantly.
Rather than battle the other “lesser” Germans, the Levante is designed as a direct competitor to the Porsche Cayenne. It comes standard with adjustable electronic suspension with air springs, Maserati’s Q4 AWD system from the Ghibli S and Quattroporte – all three share the same basic platform – and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Because this new SUV shares its underpinnings with Maserati’s sporting sedans, expect the Levante to be lithe, quiet and entertaining to drive; the same as its smaller siblings.
The 2016 New York Auto Show runs from March 25 – April 3.
