The Land Rover Defender is the most iconic name in the company’s long history. It is the essence of the company and carries with it the long standing tradition of a no compromise, go-anywhere attitude. Still refusing to age, Land Rover would only put new technology and designs down the Defender’s mouth if they would have no affect on the original recipe. The DC100 concepts unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show are evidence that Land Rover still knows its roots.
The three main ideas behind the Defender are “flexibility, adaptability and configurability”. The DC100 holds onto those, with off road add-ons such as knobby tires, a front winch and custom body panels. On top of the tidy, 100 inch wheelbase will be Land Rover technologies such as Terrain Response System which automatically selects the best traction mode for a specific environment. A Terrain-i scanning device senses obstacles, warning drivers to avoid them while off road. And future Defender drivers might not have to ever get out of their vehicles to check a water’s depth as the Wade Aid does it for drivers.
Expect to see all of these technologies, as well as a revised version of the DC100 as the 2015 Land Rover Defender.
