Chrysler is giving the 2014 Jeep Patriot a few key updates for what could be its last year in production. The biggest news is a new 6-speed automatic transmission that replaces the old CVT. The 5-speed manual makes a return in the base Sport model.
Four-wheel-drive Patriots pass Chrysler’s criteria for being a “Trail Rated” Jeep with two separate four-wheel-drive system options (Freedom Drive I or Freedom Drive II), skid plates, tow hooks, and taller ground clearance. Unfortunately, the new 6-speed auto is not available with the Freedom Drive II Offroad Package. Select that option and you’re confined to the CVT.
The Patriot has some other noteworthy features like front seat-mounted side air bags, electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, hill-start assist, illuminated cup holders, and a removable/rechargeable flashlight. Rear seats fold flat in a 60/40 configuration giving the smaller SUV a relatively generous cargo hold.
Two engines are available: a 2.0-liter I-4 making 158 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque and a 2.4-liter I-4 producing 172 hp and 165 lb-ft of torque. Expect the front-wheel-drive Patriot with the 2.0-liter and 5-speed manual to produce 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway mileage.
Built in Chrysler’s Belvidere plant in Illinois, the 2014 Jeep Patriots will begin rolling into showrooms in the second quarter of 2013. The base model Patriot starts at $15,995.
