There’s no doubt that Chrysler has a unique vehicle on their hands with the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Since its debut in 2006, the SRT8 has been a solid performer for a full-size SUV, with the latest version posting 0-60 mph times in the low 5 seconds, for instance. But improvements can always be made.

Enter the 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT8. Just like the other 2014 Grand Cherokee models, it gets a fairly extensive makeover including exterior, interior, and powertrain options. All work together to make it a more luxurious contender.

A smartly reworked grille and front fascia hide the same 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 that was reworked for 2011, but for 2014 the HEMI is mated to Chrysler’s new 8HP70 8-speed automatic transmission. It’s said to improve fuel efficiency with a new Eco mode while helping to increase the SRT8’s towing capacity by 44 percent to 7,200 pounds.

An updated Selec-Track system helps put the 470 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque down to the pavement through all four wheels. It features five dynamic modes the driver can select for the appropriate conditions: auto, sport, tow, track, and snow.

Other new features for 2014 are an electronic rear lift gate, an 8.4-inch infotainment screen, new Uconnect access for smartphones, an available 825-watt, 19-speaker sound system from Harman Kardon, and Chrysler’s new T-handle electronic gear selector.

The 2014 SRT8 goes on sale later this year. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but we’d expect it to start somewhere close to $60,365, the base price for the 2013 Grand Cherokee SRT8.
