Plans to add a third shift to the Hyundai assembly plant in Montgomery were made recently. The facility pieces together both the Elantra and Sonata and will soon receive a boost of 877 new workers to help out. With the addition, the automaker’s 2012 production capacity in the southern state will increase by an excellent 20,000 units. “This commitment is the key reason Hyundai Motor Company chose to continue to invest in the people of Alabama and increase vehicle production in Montgomery,” said Young Deuk Lim, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama.
The third shift will get its start in September of this year. Before that time, Hyundai will take in applications for various positions in early summer and begin training shortly there after. Considering the Alabama-made Sonata represents 33 percent of Hyundai’s U.S. sales, the extra help makes perfect sense. The arrival of the next line up of Elantras also warrants the added work force, especially so given that the compact car takes up about 31 percent of sales. “The continued success of Hyundai’s Sonata and Elantra in North America is a direct reflection of the dedication to quality and craftsmanship by every HMMA team member.”
