For the past 10 years, Honda Motor Company of North America has been working towards a target set forth by their “Green Factory” initiative. Their goal was to be a company that the majority of its factories sent zero waste to a landfill over a decade. Recently, Honda announced that they achieved that target as 10 of their 14 North American plants have had zero waste to landfills.

“This is an important achievement and a tremendous reflection on the commitment and continuous effort of Honda associates throughout our company over the past 10 years to reduce waste from Honda’s production operations,” said Karen Heyob, manager at Honda of America. The manufacturing plant in Lincoln, Alabama was the first Honda plant to reach zero waste to landfill status in 2001 and after that, the majority of Honda’s plants followed suit. Total annual waste has dropped since the 2001 figure of 62.8 pounds of waste for every automobile produced to 1.8 pounds. That works out to be a total of 4.4 billion pounds of waste reduced over 10 years.
