Cars.com, one of the industry’s leading automotive pricing and review outlets, recently pitted a plethora of full size SUVs together for a challenge. With a price cap set at $37,000, seven models (many of them new) fought to determine who is the best at not being a minivan. Each entry held third row seating, carried mid-level trim and ‘family friendly’ features. Beating the Kia Sorento, Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander, Dodge Durango, Mazda CX-9 and Chevrolet Traverse was the tried and true Honda Pilot.

“The Pilot remains a nice balance of size, roominess, efficiency and versatility,” said Joe Wiesenfelder, a Cars.com editor. “It has more features than I’d expect of a Honda at this price.” With an as tested price of $36,170, the Pilot featured back up camera, power lift gate, auto climate control for the rear and USB inputs. It was also the only entry to feature a rear seat entertainment system; almost vital in a segment such as the third row SUV. Another Cars.com editor, David Thomas, said, “The Pilot is the winner for me because of the high level of quality and comfort teamed to all the great entertainment features. I’m not sure how you top it.”
