American Honda is giving a select number of its senior employees the opportunity to receive a healthy severance package. Under the Voluntary Retirement Program, workers who are 59 years or older could get one year’s base pay on top of their retirement if they have been with the company for 15 or more years. The plan spans all of Honda’s U.S. operations and there are supposedly about 5,600 employees who qualify. Every so often, the automaker will make this type of offer possible and it is entirely voluntary: no one is forcing anyone to not work.
“Occasionally, we provide special acknowledgement of our tenured and dedicated associates by giving them the opportunity to retire early with some enhancements to their retirement plan,” said Jeffrey Smith, Honda Spokesperson to Automotive News.com. Even though the company has the ability to close the program at its discretion, they should allow for it to be open until April 23. After the disaster caused by last year’s March earthquake in Japan, Honda is finally starting to get its production stride back and seems to be good spirits. This severance offer might be a sign of good faith to its loyal employees who worked hard to stay with their company in a time of need.
