In November 1999, Japan and the world received its first Honda Hybrid production car: the Insight. Since then, the brand has been working hard to expand their line of Green vehicles across all markets of the world. When December 2011 was over, Honda came to realize that across a span of 12 years, they had successfully sold more than 800,000 hybrid vehicles: a personal milestone. With upcoming models such as the first Acura hybrid, the Japanese powerhouse is looking toward the future with no intention of slowing down.
Currently, there a total of seven hybrid Hondas available for purchase in more than 50 countries around the globe. By the end of spring 2012, the eighth one will be ready for action: the Acura ILX. Until 2010, there had only been three gasoline/electric offerings: the Insight (both first and second generations), Civic Hybrid and Accord Hybrid. When the second iteration of the Insight hit the market in 2009, Honda had accumulated 400,000 total hybrid sales. They hit the 600,000 mark in 2010, right before the all-new CR-Z and Fit Hybrid made their debuts. Those cars, with help from three Japanese-exclusive models, managed to boost Honda’s hybrid sales 200,000 units in a matter of one year.
