In 2002, Honda became the first manufacture to release a EPA-and CARB-certified Hydrogen Fuel Cell production vehicle: the FCX Clarity. In 2005, they made broke even more ground by leasing a handful of cars to the general public in California. Since then, they have been working at expanding hydrogen development and recently they made some more headway by opening the world’s first hydrogen station supplied by an existing pipeline. Located in Torrance California, the station gives FCX Clarity drivers a bit more convenience for re-fueling.
Jon Spallino became the first FCX Clarity owner to fill at the facility which brings the total number of hydrogen stations to seven. With more than two dozen Claritys on the road in Southern California, the “right” alternative fuel vehicle is slowly becoming more of a reality. With a 240 EPA-certified driving range, the FCX Clarity is a realistic gasoline alternative and drives just like a conventional automobile. It is currently the most efficient zero-emissions car on the road.
With this new station and a dedicated factory line put in place in 2008, hydrogen fuel celled vehicles could actually be the answer to our problem concerning alternative fuel.
