We all expected it, but the diesel-equipped GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado trucks are the most efficient available in the US. The EPA has finished all of its testing and these trucks received official ratings of 22 mpg city, and 31 mpg highway. That is for the 2WD version, of course, but even the 4WD model snagged a strong rating of 29 mpg.
The engine making all this fuel economy magic happen is a new 2.8-liter turbodiesel. This giant four-cylinder motor is good for 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. It comes mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic, but I keep holding out hope that GM will bring a manual version.
For those of you that love towing, these trucks have the segment’s best tow rating of 7,700 pounds, and come with features you would find on a larger truck like exhaust braking and trailer brake control. The cost of taking home the Duramax model is $3,730 over a normal V6 equipped model.
