General Motors announced today a partnership with AT&T to bring 4G LTE mobile broadband into select 2015 model cars and trucks.
GM says most 2015 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac models will come with 4G LTE connectivity starting in 2014. The system will span the United States and Canada and will be the largest in-vehicle deployment of mobile technology since GM’s OnStar.
The in-car connectivity could include Wi-Fi hot spots, new infotainment options like streaming video for rear seat passengers, real-time updates and faster downloads of applications, and real-time traffic updates with navigation. We imagine 4G LTE will integrate nicely into GM’s CUE and MyLink type interfaces.
The 4G LTE structure said to be specifically designed for in-vehicle use. Being integrated within the vehicle, cars and trucks will get a new external antenna to maximize coverage and connectivity. Other carrier partnerships will be announced in the coming months, expanding the 4G LTE capabilities globally.
