Deep inside the state of Michigan is the birth place and home of many Chevrolet Volts but soon, the once rapid output will come to a temporary stop. In order to even out the car’s inventory, General Motors will suspend production at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. Starting the week of March 19, Volts will not be made for five weeks in hopes that the build up of already made cars will dwindle out. GM has reported that at the end of February, they had enough cars in stockpile to last 154 days at current sales rates: 6,300.

The plan to idle production more than likely came about due to the safety turmoil of late 2011 that surrounded the battery-powered car. The NHTSA’s fire investigation caused a fall in sales for about five months straight but once the case closed in January, a rebound began and has been running strong. According to an Automotive News article, the Volts sales for the month of February jumped to 1,023 units, up from just 603 for the previous month. Production is scheduled to restart late April but official word on a potential change in capacity, either less or more, has yet to be revealed.
