The next generation of full size Chevrolet and GMC pickups are almost upon us and to get ready, General Motors will idle production for some assembly plants. Three facilities will go through a total of 21 weeks without building a truck in order to properly receive updates. The stop shouldn’t hurt the company too bad as according to an Automotive News article, GM had 202,720 full size pickups on inventory by the end of November. They plan on having around 200,000 by the end of 2011 which will give them a 90-day supply.
The first plant to become idle will be the Fort Wayne facility in Roanoke, Indiana. It’s scheduled to be quiet for nine weeks starting in January. In June, both the Flint, Michigan and Arlington, Texas assembly plants will become idle for seven and five weeks respectively. The next generation of Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will debut in 2013 which means production will begin fairly soon. Fort Wayne, one of the platform’s biggest homes, will more than likely be first to put out a 2013 model year pickup.
