General Motors is recalling 1,658 Chevrolet Sonics from the 2013-2014 model years for potentially faulty fuel tank strap welds that could lead to a fire, reports The Detroit News.

The recall includes 1,558 vehicles in the United States and 100 in Canada.

GM spokesman Alan Adler said if the strap bracket separates, the fuel tank would rest on the exhaust pipe or plastic fuel tank shield, and owners may hear a rattling or scraping noise. If the fuel tank shield and fuel filler neck do not support the tank, it could separate from the car. If the tank is punctured and there is a source of ignition, a fire may occur, Adler said.

The issue was discovered at the GM’s Orion assembly plant in Oakland County.

Most of the recalled vehicles are in dealer stock. Dealers will inspect the bracket straps and make repairs as necessary.
