File this bit of news into the “pounds and pounds of salt” category, but it seems as if GM may be gearing up to make some sort of electrified version of the Corvette. Auto Guide was tipped off that General Motors has filed trademarks for both Corvette E-Ray and E-Ray names for “motor land vehicles.” So yeah, they have filed a trademark to out an E-Ray badge on a car.
Now as for what this could really mean, it’s anyone’s guess. A likely reason would be GM simply protecting its naming property by preemptively snagging the E-Ray name before someone else does, like say a company who wanted to do EV retrofit systems. Of course, it could also mean that we will have a Corvette with battery power soon.
It is not exactly a secret that electrification is the next step up the performance ladder. Tesla has shown that EV’s can be fast with the Model S, and companies like Ferrari, Porsche and McLaren all have their own hybrid supercars, plus Honda has the hybrid NSX coming as well.
All that said, we still haven’t seen GM do anything with that Zora trademark either, so this could likely be a whole lot to do with nothing. We just have to wait and see.
