General Motors announced today the sizeable investment of $44.5 million to build a Logistics Optimization Center at its Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Lansing, Mich.
The new 400,000-square-foot addition will lay adjacent to the current factory and expand the manufacturing flexibility of the 12-year-old assembly plant. Currently, the plant builds the Cadillac ATS and all three CTS models.
GM is expecting the investment to save money and improve efficiency by enhancing the flow of materials throughout the plant. “We’ve developed an innovative material strategy that increases efficiency and improves quality to benefit our customers, employees and the bottom line,” says GM manufacturing manager Christine Sitek. “This project is the latest example of how we’re doing business differently in GM today.”
The expansion follows on the heels of the recent retooling at the plant designed for the updated CTS and ATS sedans. That expansion resulted in the addition of 600 jobs and a second sift. The Logistics Optimization Center is expected to bring 200 new jobs to Lansing.
