General Motors said it will lay off 135 hourly employees beginning at the end of September at its Defiance Casting Operations plant in Ohio, reports The Detroit News.

According to the company, the layoffs are necessary because of less demand for iron-casted engine components. Layoffs will occur in phases through the end of the year, the company noted.

Bill Grotz, the company’s spokesman, said that a number of those to be laid off are temporary workers.

The plant opened in 1948 and produces cylinder blocks, cylinder heads and crankshafts, according to news report.
