GM has been doing a lot to try to revitalize Detroit. Aside from the gardening project we covered last week, GM’s CEO Dan Akerson has stated that he will be auctioning off his 1958 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible with proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity Detroit. The Corvette in question is Regal Turquoise with a 245-horsepower V8, and of course, three pedals.

“The 1958 Corvette is a great example of American passion and ingenuity, and my hope is that the auction will help bring attention and resources to Habitat’s efforts to revitalize a historic Detroit neighborhood,” said Akerson. “I love this Corvette, and if putting it on the block can help rebuild the heart and soul of a neighborhood, I am all for it.”

This is not the first time Akerson has put money towards Habitat, earlier this year Akerson and his Wife made a personal donation of one-million dollars to help launch a project called “Leaders To Rebuild Detroit”. This project is a three-year $25 million venture to provide at least 500 families in Morningside Commons with homes, repairs, and efficiency upgrades.

“A strong America is built on strong communities, and building those communities starts with one hammer, one nail and one person – and from there it’s contagious,” Akerson said. “My wife, Karin, and I want to see this effort to rebuild our headquarters city catch on, spread out and draw scores more volunteers and millions more in contributions.”

Check out the video below for a quick walk-around of the car, and to hear Akerson himself say a few words about the car and Habitat Detroit.
