You may have read that Infiniti is releasing a new twin-turbo V6 engine for its Q50 sedan, and you may have heard us talk about what that could mean for the company in our first-ever AutoTalk.com Podcast, but let’s take a minute and actually dive deeper into this new motor. Infiniti is claiming it’s their “most advanced V6,”and for good reason. Firstly this all-new VR motor is based in the same family line of engines as the mighty V6 that powers the current GT-R.
This new motor is an all-aluminum affair to keep weight down, and it features a number of advanced technologies to increase power and efficiency. The two turbochargers that give the engine its extra horsepower are new designs that feature better speed sensors and optimized internal designs that Infiniti claims lets them spin 10-percent faster. Total maximum speed for those new turbos is 220,000 rpm.
Those turbos are even more efficient thanks to their location relative to the engine and their intercoolers. The exhaust manifolds are built into the cylinder heads to save space and weight, and it brings the turbos closer to the motor. Directly on top of the motor is an air-to-water intercooler setup with short feeds to the turbos. This engine makes the absolute most of the current technology available by using electronics to control the turbo wastegates and the variable intake cam timing. This new engine is also using electric water pumps. Special low-friction cylinder linings and direct injection round out the biggest additions.
That is a lot of new and interesting technology packed into a single motor. We can’t wait to get a chance to experience it.
