Among the numerous automotive publications, one in particular is dedicated to an American love affair: the pickup truck. For the 2012 edition of Truckin’ magazine’s half-ton shootout, four well-known and well-used workhorses were put together to battle it out for pickup supremacy. Throughout the event, America’s best-selling vehicle proved why it holds so many sales milestones to become Truckin’s “Truck of The Year”. It may have a history as old as time, but the Ford F-150 has managed to properly evolve to become significant all while still having what it takes to simply get stuff done.
Unlike its competition from the likes of Chevrolet, Dodge and Nissan, the Ford goes about its brawny business in a rather unique way. Under the hood of the winning truck was the creative EcoBoost engine which charmed its way into the hearts of the editors of Truckin’. “Ford stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam with the EcoBoost F-150 FX2,” said Truckin’ Feature Editor Maxwell Matthewson. “They gave the consumer everything they wanted in one package: impeccable styling, remarkable performance, and gas mileage that doesn’t punch you in the gut at the fuel pump.” With an output of 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, the F-150 EcoBoost is truly a force to be reckoned with. But by using a smaller, 3.5 liter displacement V6 engine that breathes through two turbochargers, the Ford can manage surprisingly decent fuel mileage, especially for a full-size pickup. In rear wheel drive from, the EcoBoost truck is rated at 22 mpg on the highway: a number easily beaten by any hypermiler.
