The completely revamped current generation Ford Explorer that debuted in 2010 has been named the most fuel-efficient SUV with seating for seven. When equipped with the all-new 2.0 liter turbocharged EcoBoost inline four-cylinder engine, the Blue Oval’s largest selling SUV is capable of a EPA-tested 28 mpg on the highway. That rating bests the Toyota Highlander’s highway economy by 3 mpg and trumps both the Honda Pilot and Jeep Grand Cherokee by 5 mpg.

“Today’s SUV buyers place a high priority on miles per gallon, so Explorer has expanded its portfolio of fuel-efficient engines with an all-new EcoBoost offering,” said Amy Marentic, Ford group marketing manager.

The 2011 Ford Explorer is the first vehicle to be powered by the 2.0 liter EcoBoost in North America. Alongside its impressive fuel economy ratings, it also delivers on power with 240 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Development for the engine resulted in more than 125 patents and the new mill uses both direct injection and dual variable valve timing. Behind the EcoBoost is Ford’s 6F35 six speed automatic with ratios that make the Explorer’s 28 mpg highway rating possible.

“SUV buyers deserve economy with their capability, so Explorer now offers best-in-class V6 and four-cylinder fuel efficiency,” said Marentic.
