Due to two Preliminary Evaluations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford is recalling certain Fusion and Mercury Milan sedans. The issue stems from the vehicle’s wheel studs and lugnuts which potentially could fracture and separate. If this were to happen, a severe vibration could occur and or an entire wheel separation. As of yet, the NHTSA has received 29 complaints about the problem and is aware of four incidents where the wheels have come loose. Prolonged driving with the faulty studs could also damage the brake rotors.
The model years at risk are 2010 and 2011 cars fitted with 17 inch steel wheels. Mercury Milans built between April 1 and April 30, 2009 as well as Ford Fusions manufactured from December 1, 2009 through November 13, 2010 are being recalled. Ford Motor Company will be issuing owner notifications on or by January 24, 2012 and is also instructing dealers on what to do in order to remedy the problem. Certified showrooms will inspect the brake rotors and all four wheel lugnuts and if needed, replace them all. The fix will occur at no extra cost to the owners.
