When Ford launched the new Mustang with a fully-independent rear suspension setup, the purists of the world moaned. It was just one more step in the Mustang’s transformation from muscle car to true sports car. Of course, the biggest reason for the change was Ford’s desire to push the ‘Stang into Europe, a land where handling and ride quality are key. It seems that this time the teeth gnashers got it wrong and Ford got it right. Now only has the new IRS Mustang been universally loved by press around the world, it seems that even those picky European customers are pleased. For the month of March, the Ford Mustang was the best-selling sports car in Germany.
Just let that sink in for a moment. The new Mustang is so good that it became the best-selling sports car in the land that holds BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Not a 911, not a 4 Series, and nothing with an AMG badge. For blasting the Autobahn, the Germans chose the Mustang.
Now that deserves some celebrating. This is a win for Ford, and America.
