Ground has officially broke on Ford Motor Company’s second engine plant located in China. A part of a joint venture, Changan Ford Mazda Automobile (CFMA) will be working towards completing the engine plant which is located in Chongqing’s Liangjiang New Area in western China. A $500 million investment was put forth for the plant which will help CFMA more than double its annual engine production capacity. When the plant is complete in 2013, that should bring annual production in China to 750,000 units.

Today’s ground-breaking ceremony represents yet another milestone in Ford’s accelerated expansion plan for China. This plan reinforces our commitment to aggressively grow the Ford brand in China and offer a full range of exciting, fuel-efficient vehicles to Chinese customers,” said Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford Asia Pacific and Africa, and chairman and CEO of Ford China.

The new engine plant will benefit Ford’s expansion plan in China. Already, Ford has developed a partnership with China’s Jiangling Motors Corporation for the production of the Transit utility van. The engines produced at the new plant will find their way into China spec production cars as Ford plans to offer 15 models to the country by 2015.
