Ford Motor Company has been riding on a turbocharged wave of success recently with its EcoBoost line of engines. The name is being tagged on many new engines from three, four and six cylinder blocks with a similarly sparse variety of outputs. One EcoBoost in particular was honestly a gamble when it found its way under the hood of the mainly V8 F-150 truck. Putting a 3.5 liter twin turbocharged DOHC V6 in Ford’s best-selling vehicle surprisingly did nothing negative to sales but instead, the action has boosted them. For its debut year, the blown block has now sold more than 100,000.
EcoBoost F-150s went on sale in February of this year. It took only until May for the engine to hold 40 percent of light duty Ford pickup sales which added to the recently updated 3.7 liter base V6, helped six cylinder trucks out sell eight-cylinder models. According to the Detroit News, the last time the blue oval sold this number of six cylinder pickups was back in 1985. Unlike those somewhat wheezy engines, the EcoBoost V6 puts out more than 400 lb-ft of torque; a figure that is very truck-like.
