Ford has a nice new feather in its cap, as the NHTSA just awarded every cab style of the F-150 a 5-Star crash test rating. There were concerns that the new Aluminum body on the pickup would make it worse in crash test ratings, but those fears can now be put to rest. IN fact, not only is this the safest truck Ford has ever built, but it beat the last-generation steel-body F-150 but a pretty substantial margin. That truck only had a four-star rating.
So the new truck weighs as much as 700-pounds less, has higher towing capacities, gets better fuel economy, and now it’s safer. That is the value of smarter engineering and high-tech materials. Congratulations on a another great Ford Truck achievement.
The awards don’t stop there, as the F-150 was also names the greenest truck in the 2015 AAA Green Car Guide.

F-150’s improved performance is enabled by up to a 700-pound weight savings through the use of high-strength steel in the frame; high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy in the body; and smart engineering.
A cross-functional group comprised of Ford truck product development veterans and researchers worked to optimize vehicle weight savings and manufacturing design to deliver improved durability, capability, fuel economy and crashworthiness. The team created 31 safety-related innovations including new structures, materials and joining methods that were tested virtually with supercomputer simulations, then retested in Ford’s advanced laboratories to engineer the safest F-150 ever.
