Ford’s iconic Explorer is moving upmarket in 2016 thanks to the introduction of a new Platinum model. Based on the powerful performance of the Explorer Sport, the Platinum adds extra luxury to the mix with real wood, nicer leather, and extra technology not found on other models. Some of the exclusive “firsts” for a Ford vehicle include a real aluminum steering wheel badge, 10-inch screen in the gauge cluster, and the industry’s first Sony Audio with Live Acoustics audio system.

On the outside the Platinum gets a new grille, revised headlights with new LED running lights, a dual-pane sunroof, 20-inch alloys, and silver painted skid plates front and back. Overall the new look is handsome, if a little bland.

Since this machine is based on the Explorer Sport, all Platinum models come equipped with the EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 engine. Thanks to a pair of turbochargers, this motor produces 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, all mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. All that power is routed through Ford’s intelligent 4WD system with their fancy Terrain Management System.

The Explorer already holds a 25-year record for best-selling SUV in the US, and with all the new improvements coming for 2016, including the new Platinum model, I expect sales will continue to be strong.
